1. The Automatic Door
The automatic door at the shop opened every time Rosa stepped near it. She was waiting for a friend and had no intention of going inside.
She moved away. The door closed. Her friend appeared through the glass, so Rosa walked forward to wave. The door opened again and a customer behind her walked out.
The security guard watched this happen three times and offered her a chair farther from the sensor.
“Does the door think I’m shopping?” she asked.
“It thinks you’re very undecided,” he said.
Rosa sat down. Her friend came outside and said, “I saw you greeting the door.”
2. The Kitchen Tap
A sensor tap in the café bathroom turned on when Leo waved beneath it. Then it stopped every time he reached for soap.
He waved again with soapy hands. Water flowed for two seconds, then vanished. He tried the other sink; it worked perfectly.
The attendant came in and found a paper towel hanging over the first tap’s sensor. Someone had placed it there to dry.
Leo washed his hands and pointed to the towel. “It’s the first thing in here that managed to turn the water off deliberately.”
The attendant moved it to a hook and wrote a small note: TOWELS OVER HERE.
3. The Folding Chair
Dad bought a folding chair for the garden and demonstrated how easily it opened. His daughter sat down; it held firm. When he tried to fold it again, the safety latch refused to move.
They checked the instructions. The picture showed a small button under the seat. Dad found it and the chair folded in one smooth motion.
“Was that difficult?” his daughter asked.
“No. I was testing how secure the latch was.”
She carried the chair into the house. “Excellent. It passed. Now can we put it away before you give it another exam?”
4. The Voice Menu
The cinema’s phone line asked customers to say the name of the film they wanted. Maya spoke clearly. The system offered a different film with a similar title.
She repeated herself slowly. It offered a third film. On the fourth try she said, “I’d like to speak to a person.”
The system replied, “We could not find that film.”
At the box office, she told the clerk what had happened. He checked the schedule and laughed. “We don’t have the film you asked for yet. The machine was trying to offer alternatives.”
“It could have said so,” Maya replied. “I was starting to think my name was a film too.”
5. The Umbrella Stand
The office bought a tall stand to keep wet umbrellas off the floor. On the first rainy day, it filled before half the staff arrived.
Someone put a small umbrella inside a large one to save space. Another copied the idea. At closing time, nobody could identify whose umbrella was inside whose.
The receptionist emptied the stand and set them out in size order. Each person claimed one, except a bright green umbrella no one recognized.
“That must be the stand’s umbrella,” a colleague joked.
The next morning the owner returned. She’d walked home under the largest umbrella without noticing hers was still nested inside.
