The Café Reservation

The little café started taking reservations. Mrs Ellis booked her usual table for two at noon.

At twelve she arrived alone. At half past twelve the waiter asked if he should bring another menu.

“No, thank you. My sister is always late.”

At one he offered to take her order. Mrs Ellis checked her watch and said, “Perhaps give her another ten minutes.”

At 1:10 her sister came through the door, carrying two takeaway coffees.

“Sorry,” she said. “The café across the road was busy. I queued for you as well.”

Mrs Ellis looked at the untouched table. “Next week,” she said, “I’m reserving a place in their queue.”
