1. The Sofa Rule
When the family bought a new sofa, they told their dog he was no longer allowed on it. For three days, he obeyed while everyone was home.
On Thursday, Mum returned early and found a warm hollow in the cushions. The dog was sitting neatly on the floor.
“You were on the sofa,” she said.
He looked at the cat, who was asleep on the armrest. Mum put a blanket over one cushion for the cat.
The dog waited until she left, then placed his front paws on the blanket. Dad watched from the doorway.
“He’s negotiating the definition of on,” he said.
“And the cat is his lawyer.”
2. The Aquarium Sign
The aquarium placed a sign beside a tank: PLEASE DO NOT TAP THE GLASS. A little boy stood very still and watched a fish tap the glass from inside with its nose.
He called an attendant.
“Your fish is breaking the rules.”
The attendant explained that the rule was for visitors, not fish. The boy considered this.
“Does the fish know?”
The attendant said probably not. The boy went back and pressed his hand against the glass without tapping.
The fish came over and met it with its nose.
“I’m giving him a warning,” the boy whispered.
“One of us has to know the rules.”
3. The Cat’s New Bed
Sofia bought a luxurious bed for her cat. The cat ignored it and slept in the cardboard box it came in.
She put the bed inside the box. The cat moved to the lid.
She put the lid on the floor next to the bed. The cat slept on the packing paper.
After a week, Sofia returned the bed. The shop assistant asked whether there was a defect.
“No,” she said.
“He reviewed every part of the delivery and picked the wrapping.”
The assistant offered her a plain cardboard box.
“How much?”
Sofia asked.
“Free.”
She took two, in case the cat preferred the second one.
4. The Parrot’s Reminder
A man taught his parrot to say “keys, wallet, phone” whenever he opened the front door. It worked so well that he stopped forgetting things.
Then the parrot learned a fourth word from his daughter: “umbrella.” Every morning it shouted all four items, even in bright sunshine.
He bought a small umbrella to carry just to satisfy it. On a rainy Friday he reached the bus stop dry and realized the bird had never seen a weather forecast.
When he got home, he thanked it. The parrot immediately said, “keys, wallet, phone, umbrella.”
He replied, “Yes, yes, I’m already home.”
5. The Puppy’s Report Card
At puppy school, the trainer handed out certificates for sitting, staying and coming when called. Bruno received a certificate for “enthusiastic participation.”
His owner frowned.
“Does that mean he failed?”
The trainer explained that Bruno greeted every other dog before each exercise and then tried to follow all of them home.
“He did sit once,” she added.
Bruno sat at her feet. His owner beamed.
“See?”
The trainer shook her head.
“I’m holding the treat bag.”
On the walk home, Bruno sat at every bakery window.
“At least,” his owner said, “he understands where the incentives are.”
