The Antique Shop Label

An antique shop had a cabinet marked ASK FOR THE PRICE.

Leo pointed to a little brass bell. “How much?”

The owner took it out, rang it once, and looked thoughtful. “Thirty pounds.”

Leo pointed to a cracked vase. The owner turned it in her hands. “Forty.”

“Do you make up a price every time somebody asks?” Leo said.

“Of course not.” She pointed to the bell. “That one was twenty this morning.”

“Then why thirty now?”

“Because I’ve spent ten minutes explaining our pricing system,” she said. “You’re paying for the tour.”
