The Airport Luggage Scale

Nadia’s suitcase was two kilos over the limit. At the check-in desk, she opened it and put on a coat, a scarf and a second jumper.

The agent weighed the case again. It passed.

Nadia zipped it shut, sweating under all the layers. “Problem solved.”

The agent glanced at the small backpack on her shoulder. “Is that your hand luggage?”

“Yes. I moved my shoes into it.”

The agent placed the backpack on the scale.

It was two kilos over the hand-luggage limit.

Nadia looked down at her feet. “Do you mind if I wear two pairs of shoes?”

“I won’t,” said the agent. “Your ankles might.”
