The School Lost-Property Box

At the school fair, a teacher laid out everything from lost property: twelve jumpers, seven water bottles and a single trainer.

“Please take anything that belongs to your child,” she told the parents.

One father picked up a blue jumper. His daughter said it wasn’t hers. He tried a red one. She shook her head again.

“How can you be so sure?” he asked. “You lose one every week.”

She pointed to a little patch sewn into the sleeve.

“That’s your name,” she said. “Mum labels my clothes with yours because you’re the one who keeps forgetting to bring them home.”

The teacher handed him three more jumpers. All had his name inside.
